"It's kinda sad you know" A female voice broke the tense silence of the forest clearing. A village lay in burned ruins about 25 feet off, weeds and other plants had begun to over-run the small village and hardly any of the small buildings and houses could be seen.
"Yeah" A deeper male voice replied. two pairs of eyes took in the site, one pair blue with white specks and the other bright yellow. The large black wolf pushed himself into a sitting position and glanced down at his charge, it was hard to believe the small 17 year-old had been under his guardianship for 13 years. The girl, Kari was laying on her stomach in the tall grass her waist length blond hair was pushed to the side almost blending into the yellowing grass. Kari's head was propped up, her chin resting on the palms of her hands, her elbows resting in the dirt. She sighed turning slightly to look up at Gerwain.
"I barely even remember the night, just..fire" she sighed again. The youth wore elven style-clothing. A knee-length summer dress that tied neatly behind her neck exposing her back so not to disturb her 4 white wings. Her arms and legs bore pale blue stripes, and a slightly darker blue triangle adorned the middle of her forehead. a thin silver scars where her wings had broken through her back at thirteen ran from the back of her neck to her lower back ending an inch below the second pair of smaller wings.
Gerwain sighed turning from her back to the village. "Well if we want to find anything about you're past in here we better do it fast."
Standing the 17 year old stretched her wings once, spreading them to their full length. The top pair where about 8 feet long and the bottom two 4 feet long. "Lets get this over with" She grumbled picking up her sword from the ground then slinging her small brown traveling pack onto her shoulder.
Gerwain sighed, it wasn't hard for him to tell exactly what the teen was doing, try as he might he couldn't get through to her mentally. The two shared a connection, talking through their minds so they could communicate without using their voices. Unfortunately the bond was strong enough for each other to feel the other's emotions and sometimes nightmares. Kari had easily put up her barrier blocking off any way he could sense what she was thinking. With a low growl he got up realizing she had already started walking toward the ruins and trotted after her.

A young male laid against the side of a small destroyed building. He lay fast asleep under the warm sun. The day was long and hard for him. Loose rags of clothes adorned his body. Covered with dirt and old blood stains from work.
He stirred slightly, wiping small droplets of sweat from his brow and pushing aside his onyx hair. Dreams of being free filled his mind. To explore the world like his father did instead of toiling in his village. The male woke with a start. Scanning the area with azure eyes. "Just a dream." he muttered silently. "Get a hold of yourself Kimic."

"Where exactly was your house?" Gerwain asked after several moments of walking around and enduring Kari's light curses and grumbles of frustration
"I was four..I cant really...I remember stables, Daddy worked there..or something like that" She stopped in front of an area that looked as if it had once been a house, a large one at that but only the stone foundation was left of it.
"Or maybe my mother..no she painted...she did art things, like make baskets, clothing and..hats..really fancy things with feathers, I remember helping her find goose feathers for hats and other things..." She frowned looking around as she tried to recognize something, anything.
"That..." she trailed of pointing at the center of the street. "Thats the market area..there was a well..." She began walking in the direction.

Kimic stood up and stretched. Every muscle in his body felt sore. With a sharp yawn, Kimic slowly made his way through the overgrown foliage. He had been here many times before to escape his village and all the people. He never figured out what happened to this village. No one would ever speak of it.
Villagers seemed to shrug off what happened. As though it never existed. As he walked through the ruins he occasionally tripped over stones and bricks. Kimic cursed under his breath and continued through the ruins.

Gerwain growled slightly ears pricking at the sound of the noise. Biting the end of her dress he yanked slightly and Kari came to an abrupt stop.
"What?" she hissed scowling down at him "I'm remembering things.." she trailed off hearing the noise too. "I thought no one was around...it could be just an animal"
Gerwain shook his head "No, I knew it was a bad idea coming her, your brother could still have people guarding this place.."
"He is not my brother." she grumbled angrily holding her sword tighter. "there is only one way to find out, come on"
Kari began to walk in the direction of the noise hiding behind the village's ruins and tall weeds, Gerwain following closely behind.

Walking through the village made a chill go up his spine. He didn't know why. What seemed to draw him here everyday?
There was a sudden sharp pain, his left leg. Kimic winced and reached down. He found a small object; rough to the touch. Pulling it up revealed a small rusted blade. The injury couldn't be seen because of the overgrowth.
Kimic sighed and continued through the village with the nagging pain. He studied the blade as he walked. Unaware that there were people in this abandoned place. As he walked his boots kept hitting objects, causing metallic clanks.
"What happened here?" He asked himself out loud, "It seems like a battlefield."

Climbing onto a stone foundation she peered over the rubble until she spotted the man. She nearly yelped when Gerwain suddenly jumped to her side but quickly covered her mouth glaring at the black wolf. Nodding with her head she gestured towards Kimic then opening her wings slightly to act as a parachute she floated towards the ground hidden within the square foundation. Gerwain landed next to her with a loud thump and Kari immediately had her sword out.
"Shh.." she hissed softly "Does he look like..a threat..or soldier?"
Gerwain shrugged "I don't know, it's hard to tell now a days!"
"Damn you" She grumbled lowering her sword. "Fine, You act like a regular animal, if he goes after you like Rollin's goons did then we know he's a bad guy right? I'll watch from here, go."
Growling lightly Gerwain walked out of the area where the door would have been and trotted towards Kimic.

Continuing his way through the village Kimic examined the buildings. "If only they would speak of what happened." He leaned against the building and looked down the path he had taken to get here.
Kimic turned his gaze upon the blade he found. It seemed odd in shape, perhaps from years of ware. Trancing his fingers through the channel and up to the hilt he noticed an odd symbol. Then a growl reached his ears. A wolf was coming toward him.
"Back beast!" Yelled Kimic. He threw the blade at the feet of the wolf to scare it off.

Gerwain growled jumping and back and Kari tightened the grip of her sword angrily. Well one thing was for certain, it wasn't one of her brothers henchmen. She Jumped down from the wall.
"Beast? Beast indeed! I'm an arch-guardian thank you very much!" He growled then stopping mid-rant he looked back at Kari who was leaning slightly on the wall an eye brow raised and a small smile on her lips.
"Nice job" She sighed shaking her head.

Kimic jumped and fell to the ground. Blinking in disbelief, "You're hearing things. That wolf didn't talk." Maybe the hard days work in the blistering sun had taken its toll on him. His azure eyes studied the wolf with an unknown passion. Watching, making sure it didn't draw come closer. He felt through the grass and grabbed a stone just to be sure.

Kari tried not to laugh as Gerwain's;s anger grew. He shifted his weight from side to side glaring first at the stone in Kimic's hand then to Kimic himself. 'Don't scare him too much' Kari thought to him 'Oh come on, just a little fun?' Gerwain asked 'No, be nice....you can ask him questions about what happened after I left'
"Throw that rock boy and I'll do more then just talk!" He growled sitting on his haunches and regarding the boy with slight curiosity. 'Are you going to come out?' He asked Kari 'Debating on it.' Kari replied.

Kimic's jaw seemed to drop. He slowly looked around and stumbled to get to his feet. Never before had anything like this happen. A beast that could speak the language of humans.
"Y-you can actually talk! This is unbelievable!" Kimic walked toward Gerwain without fear. Curiosity got the better of him. He crotched down several feet in front of the wolf, "How did-" he sighed, "Bah, I must be imagining this." Rational thought seemed to have taken over.

"Sure, I mean a living breathing wolf cant talk." Gerwain was thoroughly amused with himself and ignored Kari's frustrated comments.
'Don't Gerwain.........'
"But then the question is, am I really a wolf?"
'I'm coming out now....' Gerwain looked over his shoulder, Kari was no where to be seen 'Aw! Don't ruin my fun!'
'I'm almost there smart ass'

Kimic arched his eyebrow. A strange question to be asked by such a creature. The creature seemed like a wolf. All the fine features of one. "I don't know if you are." simply put Kimic, "Never before have I encountered a strange creature as yourself. Black magic could be the answer to my plight." That was always the answer for everyone. Black magic. It was always behind the strange and irrational.

Gerwain blinked once then chuckled slightly. "Black magic eh? No no, you've gotten that all wrong. The form of a wolf was my choice, of course I'm not a regular wolf, as I've said before, I'm an Arch Guardian,. Gerwain is my name and what is yours?"
Kari shook her head slightly before stepping into view several feet behind Gerwain.
"Ah, and there is my charge now" Gerwain said looking back at her. Kari's arms where folded across her chest and she scowled at him in frustration then looking at Kimic
"Sometimes, it would be better if he didn't talk."
