The night descended swiftly, snuffing out the warmth of the day like water putting out a candle. Everywhere, the creatures of Neopia stopped to shiver as a cold draft of wind whipped through.
Magnus rustled his wings. He had been waiting in that branch, just above the Manor, for hours. He was not about to blow his cover now. The black, mutated Eyrie smiled twistedly as he imagined his prey strolling out to lock the gate. That was when he would strike. His claws would dig deep into the flesh...Magnus shook himself mentally. Concentrate.
Inside the Lupus Manor, Grandfather Griffin Lupus tapped a single, gray-furred paw on the bell in front of him. The dull clinging noise brought his servant, the old and wizened Lenny.
"Yes..sire?"
"Call Marqis," Griffin ordered.
The Lenny bowed his long neck in assent and left. Moments later, the young Lupe padded silently down the stairs.
"Yes, what is it, Father?"
Griffin pointed vaguely in the direction of the trees.
He uttered only one word.
"Him."
